WOSL Post incorrect or historically re: First Female Premier Game
Hello WOSL Members,
We would like to correct a recent post by the league.
We made a post indicating that Shashti was the first female to take the helm of a PREMIER men’s game earlier this season.
We in fact errored on this post.
Birgit Quinn was the first female to referee a Premier Middle many years ago.
The league would like to apologize to Birgit.
She was the first female referee to lead many Premier Men’s WOSL matches, starting back in around 1989, ending her Refereeing career in around 2004. She referred for total of 15 years.
“One of my last memorable WOSL premier games with me in the middle, was Men’s Premier game; Benfica against London Portuguese.” Said Birgit Quinn.
As mentioned above, in addition to refereeing at the Men’s WOSL Premier level, Birgit was being mentored at the Men’s U21 OSL level, and was an assistant referee at a number NSL games. Birgit refereed 3 Provincial finals, and she was one of 22 women across Canada invited by the Canada Soccer to Burnaby BC to participate in a FIFA nomination camp in 1997.
Thank you, Birgit, for connecting with us and thank you for sharing your amazing journey with league officials so we could set the record straight.
Regards
WOSL Management
